5* Great Desktop Drive
Reviewed by Matt on 03/06/2013
Very speedy drive over usb3.

I have taken the drive out of the case to see which drive is inside and it was an st2000dm001 though that doesn't mean a lot. The important bit is the serial number mine was Z1Exxxxx. The Z means that it was made in Thailand and the E means that it is one of the 2 platter hdd's. I found this guide.

S - SU - Suzhou China
W - WU - Wuxi China
Z - TK - Korat Thailand
F = 3 platters with either 5 or 6 heads, while E = 2 platters.

This means that it is one of the better models.

I have seen this drive cheaper from other places but I used a 10% off token.

Highly recommended drive.

5* Superb, simple and efficient

I bought this expansion hard drive to quickly transfer all my files from my computer in preparation for an operating system update. The hard drive plugged into the USB port and worked straight away without any installation or thought.

The drive performed brilliantly and without errors. Transfer speed is very good even on USB 2.0 and there is really nothing much to worry about.

The only improvements I'd like to see would be that the drive powers down after a period of inactivity and better vibration damping properties. On a hard desk there is a low frequency hum, but this can easily be fixed by putting 4 foam pads under each hard foot. The underside of the device must have an air gap as the device can get quite warm if actively used for long periods.

Pure simplicity and great value for money.
5* Works on Linux Fine

I've had no problems using this drive as a user home directory on Linux (allowing me to free up space on my main drive for apps/OS). Formatting to ext4 takes forever though, so I decided to do a lazy init table format (-E lazy_itable_init) instead. Works fine. Happy with the purchase.
5* great

It was so simple to use and has loads of space to putall your work and more.
4* Seagate 2TB Expansion
Reviewed by Anonymous on 08/02/2013
Bought 6 when they were on offer. 2 were dodgy; refused to mount. Sent back to for refund which I got without issue. Other 4 were no problem. Fast drive, fast transfer by USB3. It's just a black box; there's only one power/transfer LED (blue) and that's your lot.
1* Warning! Will not work with Windows Backup
Reviewed by Chris on 11/04/2014
I purchased two of these to use to back up my data. One being used, one offsite.

I use Windows 7 Backup scheduled to backup at midnight each day. Or at least I would have liked to!

These drives are not supported by Windows Backup since they use a 4K sector size. A technological advancement that has been around for years and Microsoft are intent on ignoring for anything other than Win8.

Note: This is not Seagates fault but MS's, however it would be nice if Seagate (who do know about this issue) state this fact and stop people wasting their money.

These drives do however work, quite adequately as external hard drives if all you want to do is copy files over manually.

Shame really.
