5* 19S1SS monitor review
Reviewed by Rod C on 05/09/2010
This is an excellent monitor. The monitor is advertised as plug and play which is exactly how it set up on my computer running XP Home. A CD with drivers is provided. A button on the front of the monitor allows selection of office, entertainment etc to get the best visual display. However, I found that the monitor as it comes does not need any adjustment for any of these modes. Please note: the monitor recommends setting up to 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz. XP Home plug and play set the monitor to 75Hz which the documentation states that it can be set to. I tried running it at 60Hz, still at 1280x1024, but the text changed from sharp black to fuzzy purple. When set back to 75Hz the picture was excellent again. Hence my 4 stars for Ease of use. Apart from this the monitor is easy to use. I cannot see any dead LEDs or permanently bright leds. The 19 inch "square" screen is very practical for looking at documents.
2* Great quality not fit for purpose control

I bought 2x matched monitors to replace existing ones on a dual screen extended desktop configuration. My specific configuration has and is working fine, until I try to incorporate the new Philips Brilliance 19S1 monitors.
The front panel switches on the Philips monitors appear to have no function. All of the monitor function controls now appear to be via Philips proprietary SmartContolII (I downloaded latest drivers and software).
In my configuration, utilising the DVI inputs, when returning after a power up from standby (or sometimes a cold boot) I often get no front panel light and no display. This extremely annoying because the hardware front panel controls appear not function and have been superseded by the use of SmartContolII software. It is not possible to switch on or change input etc because control is accessed is via software which cannot be accessed one cannot see anything on the screen!
