Wow!
Reviewed by Tokaboy. Review Posted 05/12/2008

I was looking for a cheap NAS to use as a media server. After looking at lots of units, cheap and expensive, I went for this one which is about middle of the road on price. It's fast enough to do 2 HD streams at once to my XBox360 and media player, which is why I went for it, the cheap ones aren't. I've added a couple of 500Gb drives so I know my pics and music etc are safe form disk failure.
What I didn't realise was all the other cool stuff it can do. I use it to automatically back up all my PCs and my wifes Mac with the easy software it comes with, as its connected to my router I can now print wirelessly by hooking my printer up to one of the USB ports on the box. I'm even thinking about doing my own web page from it! It's made of metal, really quiet and the size of a big paperback book. Great piece of kit!!

Really Impressed
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 20/08/2009

I purchased one of these two weeks ago and put 2 x 1TB drives in it. The first thing that impressed me was the form factor. This thing is tiny! The second thing that impressed me was the speed - much faster than my networked PC-based RAID array.

Another reviewer stated that his unit had loud fan noise. I only get this for about 15 secs when I first turn the unit on - once its up and running the fan switches to thermostatic mode and only comes on high-power when the unit's internal temp is raised.

I transferred about 500GB of data from my PC RAID in one lump and the fan didn't get louder at all - so I reckon that other reviewer had a faulty unit.

The web-browser based configuration is really straight forward and I was up and running in no time.

The only complaint I have is that the media streaming app (media server)only allows you to share from a single root folder.

What Every Home Network Needs
Reviewed by Ian. Review Posted 12/09/2009

Forget having to switch on the main PC every time someone needs to look at the holiday photos, this has to be the way to share files. The unit will sit anywhere as long as it can be plugged into the network and power (mine's in the loft!). On a gigabit network, you can see the transfer rate top out at 150MBit/s which must be the most the SATA150 can handle SATA300 is supported but only at the lower rate. Easy to set up the basics via the web based control panel. With 2 1TB drives there is loads of space and the peace of mind that the RAID array is mirroring. Loads of additional features to keep even the biggest control freaks happy.

Ready NAS Duo 2000 (no drives)
Reviewed by N D Brown. Review Posted 16/01/2010

I am not a Netgear employee, I spent my own money on this! I needed a media server for my Sonos system, looking at QNAP, Synology etc. before seeing this one. I already have a Netgear router, WAP and 2 switches, all excellent, so despite the mixed reviews, I decided to give it a try. To be honest, I was not willing to spend a lot more on a media server by the time you factor in the cost of the drives. The offer of a free 500GB drive was a definite +, I actually installed a new 1TB drive (Samsung) and will sell the free 500GB one to offset the cost and add another 1TB later. Having one drive back up the other is a + point as it takes a long time to rip a CD library. It’s quiet once it has booted up. Maybe Netgear have fixed this issue. Manual and interface is not great (been said elsewhere), still NOT difficult to set up. It’s a solid if not perfect product and really good value for money. I have not seen another NAS with this spec and build at anything near this price.

I bought mine to load my Itunes on so I could access them from my SONOS system. Works like a dream! the fan noise is loud at start up but then goes to a whisper hardly hear it (but I am in my fifties!!) Placed a 1 Tb Seagate drive in and received the 500Gb free offer which I will hang onto for future projects. A very neat unit.

ReadyNas Duo

Awesome!!

Bought this to protect data at home with Raid and hot swappable drives and hopefully solve my media serving problems to Xbox 360 and PS3.

It does both brilliantly and I can now sleep peacefully at night knowing the data is secure and that the kids don't need me to get music playing on the Xbox.

Print serving was a breeze too so that's stopped the wife nagging when she wants to print from her laptop.

Add a UPS and any concerns over powercuts will disappear too. I've used an APC 700 unit with 8 standard sockets which gives about 40 minutes protection.

The funtionality is great too with a good interface to monitor what's going on and the ability for it to e-mail you if there is a problem.

Do check the Netgear site when selecting your hard drives though to make sure you buy the right ones, or take the easy option and buy the unit with them already in.

Build quality is excellent and it's nice to find something that does so much for so little cash.

television media players
Reviewed by keith. Review Posted 11/01/2011

cant fault the unit quiet, fast enough and secure with mirror, though there is something not previously mentioned, if you have a television with a built in media player they use the DLNA service (well mine does)which you need to activate to allow your files to be viewed, the netgear does have this even thogh its not listed in the specs, looking at the options in the menus it can get confusing as what needs activating, (DLNA was the bottom service on my menus)

Brilliant piece of kit
Reviewed by . Review Posted 08/09/2009

I purchased one of these about 6 weeks ago and put 2 x Western Digital 1TB drives in it. So far, no problems at all. The unit is quite small about the size of two VHS cassette tapes.

The fan is quite noisy while the unit boots up but once its up and running the fan is hardly noticeable even when transferring large amounts of data. I have mine set up to power on at 8am every morning so I never hear the fan.

The unit was easy to set up using the web-browser based configuration and I was up and running in no time. Adding the device to my home network was very easy.

My Creative Zen mp3 player connects to the ReadyNas Duo wirelessly and my next goal is to set up a web link.

Remangel?
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 21/07/2009

Looks like you have a faulty Duo or a network problem. The Duo is at least 2x faster than Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo and 25% faster that Terastation. Google some independent reviews and performance tests! Simple way to test to see if it's your network is to set a static IP of 192.168.168.169 on your PC and connect the ReadyNAS directly to your PC (the ReadyNAS will default to 192.198.168.168 without a DHCP server) and test your performance then. Faster? Thought so. If you're still stuck, why not try the great forum help on www.readynas.com
