5* love the features

windows 8 is a step forward. love the look and feel, and extra features not available in previous iterations of microsoft's almost ubiquitous platform.
5* Win 8 - Better than expected!
Reviewed by John on 26/10/2012
There was some confusion among reviewers prior to launch about in-place upgrades of Win 7 Pro. Some believed that only Home Basic and Home Premium could be upgraded and higher versions would need a clean install. I can set everyone's mind at rest! The upgrade disc includes an "adviser" which analyses your existing setup and tells you which programs and drivers are incompatible and allows you to uninstall them without leaving the setup screen. I had to remove one program and one driver. The entire upgrade took less than 30 min and Win 8 now runs much faster than Win 7 ever did. Certainly there are some major differences in the way you do things but it doesn't take long to settle in to them and they are more "quirky" than annoying. At this price I am more than happy with the result!
2* Tablet user interface awful on PCs
Reviewed by Peter on 20/01/2013
The Windows 8 user interface is designed for smartphones and tablets, the interface for conventional PCs and laptops is a crippled version of the previous Windows interface.
* No Start menu
* Typeface is unnecessarily large for PC/laptop screens (which are bigger than those on smartphones)
* Too much mouse movement required which is especially frustrating on a scratchpad (shutdown is a multi click operation )
* No support for POP3 mail servers on the built in email client (yes, really).
* Linked to Microsoft products and services, so Bing is the default search engine and newsfeed, mail and messaging require you to have a Microsoft account, etc.

A poor OS for systems with keyboard, mouse/scratchpad and large screen. Do not upgrade unless you want the touchscreen interface on your PC. All previous incarnations back to XP were better (even Vista).

If you're stuck with this OS on a PC learn the keyboard shortcuts.

As a PC OS Windows 8 is not fit for purpose.
2* It's just W7 in a posh frock...
Reviewed by Paul on 05/12/2012
You can buy it if you like, but I'd wait until SP4 or 5 comes out.

This OS is purely for those who want to use touch screen tech. Ideal for tablets, smart phones or other touch tech, but avoid if you're more into development (unless you're a touch screen developer).

I would stick with W7 for now and wait until W9 comes along; by then everything will be ironed out ... hopefully.
2* Why?
Reviewed by George on 16/01/2013
Complete waste of time. I wish Microsoft would put their effort into improving usability and making existing operating systems work flawlessly rather than trying to reinvent the wheel every other year. This OS does not give any compelling reason to upgrade for anybody other than hobbyists.
