5* Require 2 USB ports
Reviewed by Peter Ford on 10/01/2011

Requires 2 USB ports to be taken up - one for data transfer, 1 for power.

Its fiddley and annoying having to connect it through 2 ports, especially when there are enclosures that can power the device from just 1 cable. (although probably only at USB 2 speed).

I used to have a great Icybox one that only needed one cable. Certainly worth a look as an alternative.

As other reviewers have mentioned, only fits slim 2.5inch HDs.

Build quality is flimsy, but at least you can screw the drive to the board inside, and it is supplied with a usb 3 cable (a short one mind)
4* Does the job

This product does the job.

I cannot say about 'fatter' 2.52" drives but I have a Samsung 160GB HDD that fits perfectly and a kingston 128GB SSD that fits wonderfully to this device.

I am using the Kingston SSD now on USB3 and it is very fast!

I did try the Samsung on USB2 and it worked great (I am about to order another of this caddy for that drive).

As for needing 2 USB ports, 1 for data and 1 for power??????

I have used the supplied USB(3) cable alone and tried with a standard USB cable alone and both power the device and allow data movement without issue.

The device has 1 USB3 port and a DC 5v port (no adapter supplied - maybe due to a standard build across different models)that does not need to be used as the drive you enclose is powered through USB.

I have marked the unit down by 1 point in overall product rating due to the build (plastic end caps secured with screws) - other than that, I find this device very easy to use and great value for money.

Good Caddy - Good Price.
3* Slim Form Factor Only
Reviewed by DaveW on 08/10/2010
The specification suggests that "almost all" HDDs will fit. Not so! The clearance is about 9.5mm so only 1/8H and modern slim form HDDs will fit. If, like me you were trying to rescue the data from a 3 year old, regular Fujitsu HDD, forget it as it needs a tad over 12mm to fit. Also, although the kit comes with a screwdriver, cables and screws, there are no instructions or drivers although in fairness the Dynamode site says you don't need drivers for XP and above (assuming it is a Dynamode, nothing in the packaging or signeage confirms this).
