5* SPEED!!

Whoever has the thunderbolt connection port available, get this! data transfer speed is great. Copied over a few VMs totalling 25GB in less than 5 minutes. Build quality is great, although the device is a bit on the heavy side. Price is reasonable considering that average 500GB USB3 HDD costs around £50-70. Well happy with this purchase.
5* Excellent for the price

Very pleased with this drive. Just works, and from a power perspective shuts down when not in use or when I sleep the Mac - got it connected over Thunderbolt but presume the same would happen over USB3.

Tried it connected with either interface and get 79M/s which is reasonable for a 2.5" drive so unlike the other review with unrealistic expectations I think it's a fair speed.

Ultimately this is cheap enough that if you wanted more speed you could just replace the drive with an SSD and I'm sure it would be super-fast.
1* Avoid - sloooooooow transfer speeds !!

I bought this drive to move my 600Gb Aperture photo library off my desktop Mac and let me use the library on a couple of other Mac laptops.

I knew that at the price, it wouldn't have an SSD drive in it, but I had high expectations from the marketing that I was going to see significantly improved speeds from my usual external naive I was.... The drive, even in Thunderbolt mode won't crack 100Mbps.

I fired up a disk speed tester and tested the other drives that are in my Mac Mini i7 setup… (note my late 2011 Mini doesn't have USB3 ports....but it does have Thunderbolt)

Samsung SSD 256Gb 840 Pro - 474 Write and 517 Read with 150Gb used
WD SATA 1Tb internal drive - 94.9 Write and 96.0 Read with 241GB used

Samsung 1Tb USB3 ext drive - 31.2 Write and 36.3 Read with 148GB used
Toshiba 3TB USB3 ext drive - 30.8 Write and 37.0 with 270GB used
WD 2TB Firewire ext drive - 33.0 Write and 37.8 Read with 1.23 TB used

And, of course the mighty "up to 10Gbps speeds"….
Buffalo 1TB Thunderbolt - 76.8MB/s Write and 78.5MB/s Read with 646GB used

Hardly a life-changing speed gain is it - and certainly misleadingly optimistic to even mention Gbps speeds - what was the point ? The advertising on the product box is really just describing the potential of the Thunderbolt cable technology, not the actual disk product.

The advice from Buffalo was that given the library size, these are OK speeds and to see the best possible speeds, I should take the Aperture Library off the disk and retest that would leave it as an empty external disk....or paperweight.

I don't think that the way this product has been marketed is any credit to Buffalo and I personally, will be very, very wary of purchasing or recommending another Buffalo product.

The web is full of similar experiences with it - the only redeeming feature is that it has freed up a USB slot - and - once 1TB SSD drives become more reasonably priced, the case can be cracked open and the platter drive swapped out.
