The warm summer evenings and longer days are approaching, and for many of us it’s time to enjoy spending time outside after months of being cooped up indoors with the curtains drawn and jumpers on.
While we all look forward to the summer, it’s also a time when burglaries tend to increase with opportunists seizing their chance to target homes and garden buildings.
With homeowners leaving windows open or unlocked, or perhaps spending time eating out in the summer evenings, going away on holiday or popping out to a beer garden after a day in a windowless office, homes become easy targets… meaning that smart home security systems have never been more appealing.
Burglars sense an opportunity to target homes with the extra daylight available and, thanks to the advancements in smart home systems over the last few years, you can keep an eye on your property while you’re out.
How does a smart home security system work?
Smart security systems like video doorbells and home CCTV systems work by recording movement and images, alerting you to any unwanted interest in and around your home.
Lots of smart security cameras are synced with smartphones and even have their own dedicated apps that enable the homeowner to monitor what’s going on at home without even having to be there.
For instance, you may be away on holiday enjoying a family meal in the sunshine. Simply open the app on your phone, check the security camera and relax with peace of mind that everything’s just as you left it. All you need is an internet connection.
Can I install a smart security camera myself?
Yes, in some cases you can have a home CCTV camera up and running in a matter of minutes – and you don’t even need to be particularly tech savvy either.
It’s incredibly easy to install a lot of the smart security cameras out there, with models like the Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera just placed on a shelf, cabinet or worktop and plugged in. With a little bit of connectivity with your smartphone and the app you can then receive 24/7 live streaming and notifications sent straight to your phone.
How does a video doorbell work?
Video doorbells work in much the same way, but require slightly more installation. After fitting to the front of your property and plugging it in inside, a Ring video doorbell sends a visual alert to your smartphone enabling you to not only see who’s at the door, but to speak to them too.
This is particularly helpful when you’re trying to cook dinner, putting the kids to bed or out at work and waiting for a parcel to arrive. Rather than getting the dreaded “we called, you were out” card, you can leave the courier with instructions on where to leave the parcel instead.
Are smart security systems compatible with other smart home devices?
If you already own a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo or Google Home, or perhaps you’ve got some smart light bulbs installed in your living room, then the good news is that smart security systems are compatible with a whole host of other smart home devices.
Smart security cameras like the Nest Cam are fully compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant enabling you to ask your smart home assistant to switch the device on or off, or even to switch to a different room.
Alternatively, if you’ve got a video doorbell, you can see that you forgot to turn the outdoor lighting on and ask your assistant to switch them on as an extra deterrent.
