BT Broadband Talk (VoIP) Phones
Talk more for less over broadband
BT Broadband Talk (VoIP) compatible phones
Isn't it time you made use of the low cost of talking over your broadband line (known as VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol)? It feels just like a regular call, but it costs you far less and you can still use most touch-tone phones.
Having BT Broadband Talk is cheaper than having a second standard telephone line from BT as there is no installation charge, no line rental, a cheaper package fee and some calls are cheaper!

It's easy to set up and even easier to use.
All you need to know about making & receiving calls
- Set-up: Everything you need to set up the service is provided in your welcome pack. You will get a telephone router/adapter, cables, a master socket adapter and an installation guide. Once you have successfully configured your service, all you need to do is plug your phone into the back of the router to start making calls. For total flexibility we recommend you buy a twin, trio or quad version of the phone you like - so that you can phone from any room in the house - not just where your router is.
- Making calls? Listen to the dial tone, the first dial tone you hear is high pitched - that's the dial tone of your broadband line - you are now connected and can phone friends or family as normal*. 1471 and BT Answer are included FREE but please note that SMS text is a landline function and won't work on your broadband line, caller display works as normal on most phones but there are exceptions** . Dial 5 - and you will hear the more familiar sound of your land (PSTN) line and you will now be able to use all your phones landline functions.
- New Phone Number/Picking up Broadband & Landline Calls on the same Phone: You will get a new phone number when you sign up to Broadband Talk. When someone calls your landline - both your broadband and landline phones will ring - so you can answer the call wherever you choose (provided you have connected a phone line cable (with pink, or green ends if you have the Home Hub) from the back of the Router/adapter into your phone line telephone socket). When your broadband number is rung only your broadband phone will ring. People can call your BT Broadband Talk number as long as their network operator permits calls to 05 numbers.
For even better sound quality - Hi-Definition Sound - you can use the new BT Hub Phone, the new BT Videophone or download BT Softphone for face-to-face viewing over your PC. (Both caller and recipient need a broadband connection with BT Home Hub and BT Hub Phone 1010 or BT Broadband Talk Softphone). Click here to view the BT range of VoIP compatible phones.
Please note: You can now receive landline calls on your BT Hub Phone 1010. You may need to update your hub handset by following the below process.
- To check which version of software your hub phone is running:
- Click menu and go to handset settings.
- Scroll through until you see 'Handset software'.
- You will be presented with two options, 'Update' or 'Software Version'.
- Check the handset software version option.
- If the version is 1302 then you have upgraded to the latest software and have access to all the latest features.
- If the handset is on a different version of firmware to 1302, perform a handset update from the same menu section within the 'Handset software' section.
- Please follow the instructions on the handset and remember:
- To receive the upgrade your handset needs to be put in the charging cradle and plugged into the front of your Hub. Do not lift the handset until you see the 'Download Complete' message on the screen of the Hub Phone.
- For the handset software upgrade to work you need to be on version 6.2.2.6 of the hub firmware. You can check this by going to the BT Home Hub Manager http://bthomehub.home and checking what version you are on in the bottom left hand corner.
- Once you have the right version of software you can go back into the Hub Manager and adjust your telephone settings to receive landline calls on your hub phone.
*With your Broadband Talk connection you will be able to make calls to:
- Any person in the UK
- Other Broadband Voice customers
- 52 specified international destinations
- The rest of the World at BT Together Option rates
- Any UK mobile number
- All 08 numbers (including 0800/0845/0870)
- Premium rate numbers
- Personalised numbers (some 07 numbers)
- BT directory enquiries 118500/505
Please note that you can't call the operator, non BT directory enquiries, 101 (non-emergency calls i.e Community support and anti social behaviour) and dial-up Internet service providers. If you dial a prohibited number you will hear the following message: "Sorry, access to that number is not available".
Please also note that this is a voice service provided over a Data Network service and as such, service availability is not guaranteed. Therefore if your broadband connection fails, your voice service will also fail. Your service may cease to function if there is a power cut or failure. Power cuts or failures may be caused by reasons outside our control.
For these reasons we strongly recommend that you make alternative arrangements so that you can call these numbers
If your phone cable (with pink ends, or green if you have the BT Home Hub) is attached to the router and the phone socket, then in the case of a power failure or network failure your Broadband Talk phone will automatically revert back to your PSTN line.
If you do make an emergency call using your Broadband Talk service, please note that emergency location Information, captured and passed to the Emergency Services for use in the case of an emergency call, is limited to the address of the BT Broadband Talk telephone line or the address you provided when you ordered the service (your installation address).
** Compatible BT Broadband Talk Phones
BT Broadband Talk requires a touchtone phone. All standard touchtone corded phones and the majority of cordless and digital cordless touchtone handsets work with BT Broadband Talk. However, there are 3 issues with some of the digital cordless handsets:
- The Synergy 600 and 700 handsets do not ring if used with a Voyager 10V, and the Your Phone model does not ring if used with any of the routers.
- In addition to the Synergy 600 and 700 handsets, the Synergy 3100 and 3500 and the Freelance XA500 do not show the last 3 digits on the Caller Display while the Synergy 3105 & 3505 handsets do not show the last three digits on the Caller Display only if used with a Voyager 10v.
- The Synergy 2110 and 2150 and the Relate 350 do not have the caller display facility.
Please note that old pulse dial telephones will not work with BBTalk.
