What is a wireless home network?
Connect two or more computers so they can communicate/share information - and you've got a network. Do it without wires - and it's a wireless network! The connection is made through a small box containing a router, hub and ADSL modem - making it possible to share your broadband connection. You may also need additional adapters to complete your network.
What are the benefits of wireless home networking?
Get the most from your broadband connection by sharing it across all of the computers in your home, wirelessly, via a home network.
- Use up to 10 computers at the same time, without slowing down your broadband connection
- Avoid messy wires: Surf the web, check your email and game on-line anywhere in the home or garden
- Share files and exchange information between your computers without the need to keep swapping disks
- Share resources - you only need one printer for all networked computers
- Protect your PCs with a professional standard firewall
- Simple to set up and use, fully supported by dedicated helpdesk
- BT products enable data transfer up to 5 times faster than before (using new 11g technology) so you can exchange music, videos and pictures faster than ever before between your computers
How do I know if my PC is capable of being connected to a home network wirelessly?
If your laptop or desktop PC is already wireless (look for a Centrino label or your PC user guide), it is already able to connect wirelessly to your home network/router.
If your laptop or desktop PC isn't wireless capable, you will need to buy an additional adapter. Each PC you wish to connect wirelessly will need a wireless adapter (unless wireless is integral of course). There are 2 different types of BT branded wireless adapters for PCs which can be found in the product table at the top of this article.

Top troubleshooting tips
No lights, nothing.
Check the following:
- You've passed your Broadband line activation date
- All the cables and cords are fully plugged in to all their sockets
- You're using a microfilter on the line and that it is fully plugged in.
- Ensure that the unit is turned on, if necessary. (BT Voyager products have an on/off button on the back panel, other BT routers, such as the BT 1800HG, turn on as soon as they're plugged in.
- If you've checked all this, and the router is still not working, please ring the helpline number in your user guide.
All router lights are green but my PC can't connect wirelessly.
Check the following:
- If you're using a built-in wireless adapter on a laptop or PDA, be sure that the wireless is enabled/turned-on. Some laptop manufacturers have an actual switch that you have to switch in order to turn the wireless on.
- Do you have the latest drivers for your wireless adapter? If you have an older wireless adapter, for example a BT Voyager 1010 or BT Voyager 1020 which use 802.11b wireless technology, you should check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers for your adapter. You may need to go back to your old connection to do this, or use an ethernet cable (this will be the yellow cable in your BT pack) to make a wired connection to your router to connect to the Internet. If you have a Voyager adapter, you can check for the latest drivers at www.bt.com/voyager.
- Check that you've entered the Wireless Network security key correctly. Most routers now have basic wireless security enabled by default. This means that you have to enter the unique 13-digit key the first time you try to connect your adapter to the wireless network. If you have problems with this, follow the directions with your router to turn off the wireless security, temporarily, just to make sure that you can connect when the security is not on. Then, re-enable the wireless security and try to connect again.
Everything is set up but I can't access the internet.
It's possible that your Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) is not set to access the Internet via your new local area network (LAN). This is quite simple to fix.
- In the browser, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then the Connections tab.
- On this tab, set the connection option to: "Never dial a connection."
- Then, click 'okay' to go back to the browser page
- Type in the web address to access your new router. (such as: voyager.home or gateway.2wire.net)
- Follow the instructions that came with your router for entering your Broadband username & password into the router. You will only have to do this once.
- When these have been saved into the router, you should then be able to connect to the Internet.
